Delusions of Grandeur
Why have I created yet another Palm Pilot page? Because I could, of
course.
I have been the proud owner of a Palm Pilot Professional since January
1998. I recently bought the 8MB upgrade card with OS3 from TRG
because I was sick of constantly worrying about how to fit a new 6KB app
onto my poor overstuffed baby.
Further Delusions of Grandeur
I recently launched a new Palm site, Palm Computing Devices at Suite101.com. I write a new article every week, and maintain a categorized list of Palm links. I will also post announcements of any and all Palm Users Group meetings. There is also a discussion forum accessible to Suite101 members.
If you have suggestions for future articles, send me email.
Still More Delusions of Grandeur
I have started writing some applications and game modules for the Palm. Visit my Palm Development Page.

Applications for every day
- JFile ($19.95)
- I use JFile to maintain catalogs of my books, CDs, and video tapes.
I had developed a nasty habit of buying multiple copies of some of my books. They
still looked interesting the second and third time I saw them in a bookstore.
I actually own 5 copies of one of my physics books spanning 3 different
editions. With JFile, I can check if I own a book before I buy it.
- CSpotRun
(free)
- My favorite DOC reader, CSpotRun is small, free, and handles an unlimited
number of DOC files.Perhaps the best feature is an optional toolbar at
the bottom of the screen controlling fonts, line spacing, and the orientation
of the text. The toolbar also provides pull-down menus to jump to specific
points in the current document and to jump to any document loaded on your
pilot.
- Commute ($10)
- A must have for anyone who must schedule their life around the vagarities
of public transportation, Commute is a specialized database program designed
to manage bus and train schedules. Commute filters on the day of the week,
time of day, and even the time of the year. Commute comes with a PC tool
for creating schedules and also provides a simple shorthand for quick entry
of regularly spaced trips directly into the Pilot database.
- PocketC Runtime (free)
- The PocketC Runtime allows you to run PocketC applets written and compiled
by other people. There are a lot of really great PocketC applets including
various calculators, graphing programs, and lots of games. If you are into
the programming scene you can get PocketC with the ability to compile your
own applets for $18.50.
Utilities to run my way
- Backup Buddy ($15)
- Backup Buddy lets you backup any or all of your files to your PC or
Mac whenever you HotSync. You can select files for backup by type (application
or database) or you can individually select which files get backed up.
You can choose to do incremental backups or to backup all of your data
each time you sync.
- HackMaster ($5)
- The quintessential customisation tool, HackMaster provides an interface
for enhancing the Pilot OS. My favorite hacks include MenuHack
Hack, Eco
Hack, ChronoHack, and HackDelete Hack.
Games I love to play
- PocketGammon
($15)
- A really cool backgammon implementation. Supports doubling.
- PictureLogic
($12)
- PictureLogic puzzles, also known as nonograms or picross puzzles, are
solved by coloring in the correct squares on a grid given only the number
of consecutive squares to be filled in in each column and row. A must have
for any fan of logic puzzles, PictureLogic comes with a puzzle solver.
Registered users can create their own puzzles or solve the many puzzles
created by other registered users.
- Triv ($15)
- Just released, Triv is Trivial Pursuit for the Pilot. Triv comes with
several numerical and alphabetical general trivia modules as well as specialized
modules in entertainment and sports. You can play in game mode complete
with a pie to complete or in quiz mode.
- Wordlet/Scramblet
($15 ea)
- Wordlet and Scramblet are a pair of word games that use the same word
database. Wordlet is a Boggle clone, while Scramblet allows you to bet
that you can find a set number of words using 7 provided letters in 90
seconds. There are five word banks available of various sizes, and both
games allow you to customize the word database.
- Miner 2149
($12)
- Miner 2149 is the first build-your-own-colony simulation for the Pilot. You
must colonize and make a profit from mining ore on a distant asteroid.
Miner supports different terrain, requires you to balance your resources
to provide food, life support, and health care to your miners, and includes
natural disasters. Miner requires the PocketC Runtime.
- Rally 1000(free)
- Mille Bourne for the Pilot. Cool race car animations keep track of
scoring during the game and the checkered flag is waved at the finish line
when someone wins.
- Montana ($5)
- It's finally here! Another great title from Seahorse
Software, Montana is a difficult solitaire game where you try to line
up the cards from 2-K in each suit. The game board consists of 4 rows of
13 slots. The aces are removed from the board, and you fill in empty spaces
with cards that are one number higher and the same suit as the card to
the left of the space. Spaces to the right of Kings cannot be filled. The
deal ends when no more cards can be played. This version lets you choose
from 0 - 3 redeals per game.
- Pyramid (free)
- A really nice implementation of Pyramid solitaire, Pyramid has 4 levels
of difficulty with separate high scores and statistics for each level.
The author maintains a high
score site listing the top ten scores for each level.
- TenPin
(free)
- This solitaire game is completely addictive.Using a deck of cards with
values 0-9, TenPin deals 10 cards into the 10 pin positions of bowling. Each
ball consists of three columns of cards. You bowl two balls per frame and
there are ten frames per game. You remove pins by matching the value of
the last digit of the sum of 1,2, or three consecutive pins with a card
you bowled.Scoring is identical to real bowling.
- Grouper
(free)
- An interesting solitaire game where you match and remove sets of three
cards based on their foreground color, background color, shape, and size.
Includes three difficultly levels with different characteristics and number
of cards to clear from the board.
- HMaki
(free)
- HMaki is the best of the BreakThru clones for the Pilot. Offers multiple
options for scoring, block size, and number of patterns on the board.
- MineHunt
(free)
- The best of the Mines clones, MineHunt is one of the four games that
comes with the Pilot.Supports 4 levels.
Places to Go, People to See
Here are some of my favorite Pilot sites:
- Marci's Pilot Page
- See why Marci bought a Pilot and her picks for indispensible Pilot
software
- Mary Jo's Pilot Library
- Get the Oz books in DOC format. Enough said.
- The Baker Projects
- The home of all things Science Fiction for the Pilot
- RoadCoaders
- A comprehensive resource for Pilot application development.
